Tip Calculator
Calculate a tip, total bill, and split amount per person.
How to Use the Tip Calculator
Enter the bill amount and the tip percentage you want to calculate. You can type any percentage or use one of the quick percentage buttons.
If the bill is shared, enter the number of people. The Tip Calculator will calculate the total tip, total bill, amount per person, and tip per person.
You can also select a currency for displaying the results. The currency selector changes the displayed currency symbol but does not perform currency conversion.
If you prefer a whole-number total, enable the optional rounding feature before calculating.
How to Calculate a Tip
To calculate a tip, multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100.
For example, suppose the bill is $100 and you want to calculate a 20% tip.
Tip = $100 × 20 ÷ 100
Tip = $20
Add the tip to the original bill:
$100 + $20 = $120
The tip is therefore $20, and the total bill is $120.
Tip Calculator Formula
The basic tip formula is:
Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100)
To calculate the total bill:
Total Bill = Bill Amount + Tip Amount
For example, with an $80 bill and a 15% tip:
$80 × 0.15 = $12
$80 + $12 = $92
The tip amount is $12 and the total is $92.
How to Split a Bill With the Tip Calculator
When several people share a bill, first calculate the total including the tip. Then divide that amount by the number of people.
The formula is:
Amount Per Person = Total Bill ÷ Number of People
For example:
Bill: $100
Tip: 20%
People: 4
The tip is $20, making the total bill $120.
Then:
$120 ÷ 4 = $30
Each person pays $30.
The tip can also be divided between the four people:
$20 ÷ 4 = $5
Therefore, each person’s share includes $5 of the tip.
How the Tip Calculator Rounds the Total
The optional Round total to next whole amount feature increases the final total to the next whole monetary amount and adjusts the tip accordingly.
For example:
Bill: $47.35
Selected tip: 20%
A 20% tip is:
$47.35 × 0.20 = $9.47
The unrounded total is:
$47.35 + $9.47 = $56.82
When rounding is enabled, the calculator changes the total to:
$57.00
The adjusted tip becomes:
$57.00 − $47.35 = $9.65
Because the tip changed slightly, the calculator also displays the resulting effective tip percentage.
If the calculated total is already a whole amount, it remains unchanged.

Tip Calculator Frequently Asked Questions
How Do You Calculate a Tip?
Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100. For example, a 20% tip on $50 is $10.
How Do You Add a Tip to a Bill?
Calculate the tip amount and add it to the original bill. A $100 bill plus a 20% tip results in a $120 total.
How Do You Split a Bill With a Tip?
Calculate the total bill including the tip, then divide the total by the number of people sharing the bill.
Can I Enter a Custom Tip Percentage?
Yes. You can use the quick percentage buttons or enter any non-negative percentage manually.
Does the Currency Selector Convert Money?
No. Selecting a currency only changes how monetary values are displayed. The Tip Calculator does not perform currency conversions.
What Does Effective Tip Mean?
When the rounding option changes the final total, the actual tip amount may be slightly different from the percentage originally selected. The effective tip shows the resulting tip as a percentage of the original bill.
How Much Should I Tip?
Tipping customs vary by country, type of service, and situation. The calculator does not recommend a particular percentage; it calculates whichever percentage you choose.
