What Is a Sales Commission?
A sales commission is an amount paid based on the value of a sale. It is commonly calculated as a percentage of the total sale amount.
For example, if a salesperson earns a 6% commission on a $25,000 sale, the commission is:
$25,000 × 6% = $1,500
The amount remaining after commission is:
$25,000 − $1,500 = $23,500
Commission-based compensation is commonly used in sales roles. For additional context about sales compensation structures, see the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics overview of sales occupations.
Commission Formula
The basic formula for calculating commission is:
Commission = Sale Amount × Commission Rate ÷ 100
For example:
Sale Amount: $8,000
Commission Rate: 5%
Commission:
$8,000 × 5% = $400
Amount After Commission:
$8,000 − $400 = $7,600
How to Calculate Commission
To calculate a commission from a percentage, multiply the sale amount by the commission rate expressed as a decimal.
For example, suppose the sale amount is $10,000 and the commission rate is 7.5%.
Commission = $10,000 × 7.5 ÷ 100
Commission = $750
The amount after commission is:
$10,000 − $750 = $9,250
How to Calculate the Commission Rate
If you know the sale amount and commission amount, you can calculate the commission rate with this formula:
Commission Rate = Commission Amount ÷ Sale Amount × 100
For example:
Sale Amount: $20,000
Commission Amount: $1,200
Calculation:
$1,200 ÷ $20,000 × 100 = 6%
The commission rate is 6%.
How to Find the Sale Amount From a Commission
If you know the commission amount and commission rate, you can work backward to calculate the sale amount.
Use:
Sale Amount = Commission Amount ÷ (Commission Rate ÷ 100)
For example:
Commission Amount: $1,500
Commission Rate: 6%
Calculation:
$1,500 ÷ 0.06 = $25,000
The original sale amount is $25,000.
Commission Calculation Examples
What Is a 5% Commission on $10,000?
Commission:
$10,000 × 5% = $500
Amount After Commission:
$9,500
What Is a 10% Commission on $2,500?
Commission:
$2,500 × 10% = $250
Amount After Commission:
$2,250
What Is a 7.5% Commission on $8,000?
Commission:
$8,000 × 7.5% = $600
Amount After Commission:
$7,400
What Commission Rate Produces $600 From a $12,000 Sale?
Commission Rate:
$600 ÷ $12,000 × 100 = 5%
What Sale Amount Produces a $750 Commission at 3%?
Sale Amount:
$750 ÷ 0.03 = $25,000
Commission vs. Profit
Commission and profit are different business calculations.
A commission is typically an amount calculated from a sale using an agreed commission rate.
Profit is the amount remaining after relevant costs are subtracted from revenue.
For example, a $10,000 sale with a 5% commission produces a $500 commission. That does not necessarily mean the business earns $9,500 in profit, because other costs may also apply.
Use our Profit Margin Calculator when you need to calculate profit and profit margin rather than commission.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Does a Commission Calculator Do?
It calculates commission from a sale amount and commission rate. It can also calculate the commission rate or determine the sale amount from a known commission.
How Do I Calculate a 10% Commission?
Multiply the sale amount by 0.10.
For example, a 10% commission on $5,000 is:
$5,000 × 0.10 = $500
How Do I Calculate Commission Percentage?
Divide the commission amount by the sale amount and multiply the result by 100.
Can the Calculator Find the Original Sale Amount?
Yes. Enter the commission amount and commission rate in Find Sale Amount mode.
Can I Use a Decimal Commission Rate?
Yes. Rates such as 2.5%, 6.25%, or 12.5% can be entered directly.
Does the Calculator Support Commissions Above 100%?
Mathematically, yes. The calculator does not impose an artificial 100% maximum on the commission rate. Whether such a rate makes sense depends on the particular agreement or situation.
Does the Calculator Include Tiered Commissions?
No. This calculator uses a single commission rate. Tiered commission structures may require different calculations for different sales levels.
Does Changing the Currency Change the Calculation?
No. Currency selection changes only how monetary values are displayed. It does not perform currency conversion.
