What Is VAT?
VAT, or Value Added Tax, is a consumption tax applied to goods and services in many countries. It is generally calculated as a percentage of the net price.
The price before VAT is commonly called the net price, while the price including VAT is called the gross price.
For example, if the net price is €100 and the VAT rate is 20%:
VAT = €20
Gross Price = €120
For more information about how VAT works in the European Union, see the European Commission’s overview of VAT.
VAT Formula
To calculate VAT from a net price:
VAT Amount = Net Price × VAT Rate ÷ 100
To calculate the gross price:
Gross Price = Net Price + VAT Amount
For example:
Net Price: €80
VAT Rate: 20%
VAT Amount:
€80 × 20% = €16
Gross Price:
€80 + €16 = €96
How to Add VAT
To add VAT to a net price, multiply the net price by the VAT rate divided by 100. Then add the VAT amount to the net price.
For example, suppose the net price is €200 and the VAT rate is 20%.
VAT Amount:
€200 × 20% = €40
Gross Price:
€200 + €40 = €240
How to Remove VAT From a Gross Price
To remove VAT correctly, you should not simply subtract the VAT percentage from the gross price.
Use this formula:
Net Price = Gross Price ÷ (1 + VAT Rate ÷ 100)
Then:
VAT Amount = Gross Price − Net Price
For example, if the gross price is €120 and the VAT rate is 20%:
Net Price = €120 ÷ 1.20 = €100
VAT Amount = €120 − €100 = €20
Why Subtracting the VAT Percentage Gives the Wrong Result
Suppose an item has a net price of €100 and 20% VAT is added.
The gross price becomes €120.
If you subtract 20% directly from €120, you get €96, not €100.
This happens because the original 20% VAT was calculated from the net price, not the gross price.
To reverse VAT correctly, divide the gross price by 1 + the VAT rate expressed as a decimal.
How to Find the VAT Rate
If you know both the net price and gross price, you can calculate the VAT rate.
First:
VAT Amount = Gross Price − Net Price
Then:
VAT Rate = VAT Amount ÷ Net Price × 100
For example:
Net Price: €80
Gross Price: €96
VAT Amount:
€96 − €80 = €16
VAT Rate:
€16 ÷ €80 × 100 = 20%

Frequently Asked Questions
What Does a VAT Calculator Do?
A VAT calculator helps calculate the VAT amount, net price, gross price, or VAT rate. It can be used both to add VAT and to remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price.
What Is the Difference Between Net and Gross Price?
The net price is the amount before VAT. The gross price is the amount after VAT has been added.
How Do I Add VAT to a Price?
Multiply the net price by the VAT rate divided by 100 to calculate the VAT amount. Then add the VAT amount to the net price.
How Do I Remove VAT From a Price?
Divide the gross price by 1 + the VAT rate expressed as a decimal.
For example, to remove 20% VAT:
Net Price = Gross Price ÷ 1.20
Can I Enter a Custom VAT Rate?
Yes. You can enter any non-negative VAT rate. The percentage buttons are optional shortcuts.
Are the VAT Presets Official Rates for Specific Countries?
No. The presets are provided only as convenient percentage shortcuts. VAT rates can vary by country, product, service, and tax category.
Does the Calculator Automatically Determine My VAT Rate?
No. You should enter the VAT rate applicable to your transaction. The calculator performs the mathematical calculation but does not provide tax or legal advice.
Does Changing the Currency Change the VAT Calculation?
